About Me

I’m Taryn Codner-Alexander (She/Her), licensed mental health counselor, first generation West Indian and founder of Tea for the Soul Mental Health Counseling, PLLC. The intersection of being a woman and of color is a unique experience. Often, for cultural and societal reasons, women of color don’t have time or space to focus on themselves for healing. As a woman of color and a mother, I intimately understand trying to find the balance between other and self which at times can result in neglect of the self. I also have personal experience with navigating strained relationships with a parent and have seen first hand professionally and personally the impact that experience can have. To assist you on your healing journey, I will help you process unresolved relationships from the past, struggles with self-esteem, and difficulties with managing anxiety. I work from an integrative and culturally informed approach to help you process the past while giving you tools for the present.
I received my Master of Education in Mental Health Counseling and my Master of Arts in Psychological Counseling from Teachers College, Columbia University. I graduated with a bachelor’s of arts in psychology and in criminology. I have several years of experience working with people of color in various settings including the criminal justice system, child welfare, and private practice.
